Spend snapshot

Our Spend Snapshot tool helps you to understand where all your hard-earned cash gets spent.

The Spend Snapshot tool helps you to record all your income and expenses in one place so you can see how much you're spending, and what you're spending it on. It also allows you to test out any changes you might like to try, like reducing your discretionary spending or getting started on saving your 'emergency fund'.

What you'll need:

  • Your bank statements or bills for the last few months
  • A calculator
  • Some quiet time - 5 to 20 minutes

The outcome may be surprising to you but it sets you up to start making some changes to work towards your better financial future.

Summary

The graph below visually represents where you're spending your money. The number in the centre tells you how much you have left over, or, if it's a negative figure, then how much you may be borrowing to cover a shortfall.

You can switch the view between weekly, fortnightly, monthly or yearly. This could be helpful when testing out what a difference small changes on a weekly basis can make over a whole year.

You can go back and edit the amounts in each category to try out different scenarios for saving on costs, setting up a savings plan, making voluntary contributions to your super and so on.
